Of all the software publishing companies who write anti-virus software, there are really only the Top Ten good ones.
When choosing anti-virus software to HELP protect your computer, be aware that NO software is perfect. New threats written TOMORROW can open up a security hole and allow a virus to infect your computer.

Anti-virus software is only PART of the things needed to keep a computer free of infections.
1. Install a DSL Firewall Router or a CableModem Firewall Router if you are on a Broadband connection -- so that hackers can not get to your computer. If your computer only has a Software Firewall to protect it from INTRUSIONS, and if that firewall software is Microsoft Windows Firewall built into XP, Vista, Windows7, etc... it is probable that the computer could become infected and you wouldn't even know it.
You need to add the Hardware Firewall... in the Router... so that hackers don't have access to the Ethernet Jack on the back of the computer in the first place.

Most people who use the FREE version of AVG software probably "don't have a clue" what it DOESN'T protect your computer from.
In short, the Free versions of ANY software only include the ability to REMOVE a VIRUS after it has already penetrated the computer. Not Good.
All of the anti-virus vendors have higher-priced versions that include the ability to BLOCK incoming viruses - before they can even be installed... and have Additional Features... such as the ability to block OTHER types of malicious programs ... called Malware, Spyware, Hi-jack-Ware, etc. Plus, the higher cost versions also include a two-way Firewall Software... which usually has the ability to alert you if a program wants to have access to the internet.
