 Making Backups Minimize
Making Backups - Posted Friday, January 15, 2010

>>Is it a good idea to back up my computer every night and if so how do I do it?

No, it is not a good idea to backup the whole computer every night.
However, Windows should have Restore Points to go back to in the event you install software that is not compatible.

Backup What and When?
1.  You only need one backup of the System in the event of a serious problem with the Operating System.
2.  Backup your photos & data files once per month.
3.  Backup any Acounting files or other very important files once a day or once a week.

If you have an Accounting program like Quicken or QuickBooks, those data files should be copied over to a Memory Stick.
If you have lots of photos and .doc files in the My Documents section, the My Documents folder can be copied to a memory stick or a DVD Drive.
CD-Rom drives are no longer used for backups because they only store 652 MB - which is not a lot nowdays.
Memory Sticks with 8 GB of space are selling for $25 range (in January 2010) and are much easier to use.

When a 1USA customer brings a brand new computer into the 1USA office - before it has any mis-configurations or viruses on it - I can make a Backup Image of the hard drive... because you don't receive a CD-Rom along with the new computer like a few years ago.
But again, simply going back to a previous Restore Point will usually fix the problem, easier.
