There are lots of companies out there who are experiencing spam coming into their computers.  There was a question posed, and the answer provided by BarryZ of 1USA below.

The Quesion:

Call me late to the party, but I have a question that was not answered when I asked it years ago of my ISP. I know that email addresses can be spoofed, but I do not understand why there are not simple mail rules to catch the most obvious ones.

Why would I ever send myself mail? As a test perhaps? I'd be willing to drop that functionality to cut out all the spam that I apparently sent to myself. If a message has my name in the from field, delete it. Why isn't that an option? What about when my name isn't in the To field? How did I get it? Friendly name or not, if either one is wrong, dump it. If the message is from the future by more than a day, delete it. There are many obvious points in the past you should be able to select as well; such as before the internet was invented, before MS Windows, before Y2K, before last year, or before I last checked for mail.

I realize that SMTP is broken, that it was never intended for public use, and that it never had safeguards designed into it, but I don't know why the email programs on the user computers are not any more adaptable to these oddities. Outlook? Hello?

To be fair, since I moved to my new ISP, I get no spam at all. Nor do I get much from work. It could be that I surf more safely now, and keep my email fairly secure. -- CR

Yes It Can Be Done
.. And we've been doing it since 2001. 1USA.Com (national ISP like AOL, MSN) has a way to prevent emails with faked headers. If your email address is feedback@SunbeltSecurityNews.com and someone tried to send you an email using your own email address, there are SPF protocols available as well as server programming. Server programming can be set to either challenge, redirect, deny or drop such emails.

For instances where email may have an email address of feedback@hotmail.com, if the email is not received here at 1USA from an authentic Hotmail server, likewise there is a choice to challenge, redirect, deny or drop.

In addition, the mail servers at 1USA.Com run FOUR different anti-virus programs, protecting the customers better than any other ISP or any other email service. 1USA.Com hosts email for many domains, and there are additional generic domains available if a new customer doesn't want to use TheirName @ 1USA.Com.  In fact, you don't even need to change your current email address in order to get email filtering by 1USA.

Several things to be aware of this year...as gangs and robbers are now plotting different ways to get a person to "stop" their vehicle.

There is a gang initiation reported by the local police department that gangs are placing a car seat by the road...with a fake baby in it... waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the baby...
Note that the location of this car seat will usually be beside a wooded or grassy (field) area ...and the person - woman - will be dragged into the woods- beaten and raped- usually left for dead.

Somebody e-mailed this to me. It seems a Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. House, for instance, is feminine: la casa; pencil, however, is masculine: el lapiz.

A student asked, "What gender is computer?"

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men's group decided that computer should definitely be of the feminine gender (la computadora), because:

1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine (el computador), because:

1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

Be Cautious About Giving Info to Census Workers 
  
With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the e country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data. 
 
 The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice: 
 
** If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device (GPS....why?), a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions.  However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home. 
  
** Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information.  Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census. REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR  ADDRESS. 
  
While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION.  The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations..  Any one asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau. 
 
AND REMEMBER, THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) ON GATHERING THIS INFORMATION.  No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau. 
  
Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census.

An estimated 5.8 million pages belonging to 640,000 websites were infected with code designed to launch malware attacks on visitors, according to a report released Tuesday.
The Malware is mostly software that wants you to divulge credit card information or would lead to cleaning out your bank accounts.
Some will say "your computer is infected, buy this"... while other types are invisible and run in the background.
The numbers, compiled over the third quarter by security firm Dasient, represent a significant jump in number of legitimate websites that have been compromised.

Rogue or bogus programs passing themselves off as real antivirus software have been one of the malware themes of 2009, but the APWG's numbers for the first half of the year show that the organization's members detected 485,000 samples, more than five times the total for the whole of 2008.

Emails are arriving from other ISPs pretending to be from CareerBuilder.com
The emails try to get you to click on a link in the email... thereby infecting your computer.
1USA has had to put a filter on emails arriving from CareerBuilder.Com... so that emails arriving from only their authorized mail servers will be accepted.

Here is an example of why a sender's From-Address might be rejected at 1USA.
Reason:  Because it is arriving from the wrong server.
In this case, the server is a hacked PHP script on some website.
Look at all the different (faked) From-Addresses that are arriving from the server at php.telenet.ge

Since the emails are not legit, they are probably selling something or maybe trying to deliver a virus.

Domains can protect their email addresses using Sender Policy Framework (SPF).  Yahoo Groups doesn't use the SPF worldwide standard, they have their own Domain Keys verification system.

Consequently, when a AOL customer is a member of a Yahoo Group, and the email goes out, Yahoo (in their infinite wisdom) will send out the email using the AOL customer's email address... which violates the AOL trademark and AOL's SPF Policy.  Recipients of such messages are instructed by AOL to REJECT such messages that do not originate from an authorized AOL mail server.

To get around this problem, tell the 1USA Webmasters that you are a member of a  Yahoo Group, and an over-ride can be put in place so that you will receive the emails from that Yahoo Group.

The latest figures from the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) have hinted that Fake antivirus programs are multiplying at such a rate they could start to overwhelm the detection capabilities of signature-based scanners.

Rogue or bogus programs passing themselves off as real antivirus software have been one of the malware themes of 2009, but the APWG's numbers for the first half of the year show that the organization's members detected 485,000 samples, more than five times the total for the whole of 2008.

Emails are arriving from other ISPs pretending to be from CareerBuilder.com
The emails try to get you to click on a link in the email... thereby infecting your computer.
1USA has had to put a filter on emails arriving from CareerBuilder.Com... so that emails arriving from only their authorized mail servers will be accepted.

Here is an example of why a sender's From-Address might be rejected at 1USA.
Reason:  Because it is arriving from the wrong server.
In this case, the server is a hacked PHP script on some website.
Look at all the different (faked) From-Addresses that are arriving from the server at php.telenet.ge

Since the emails are not legit, they are probably selling something or maybe trying to deliver a virus.

Domains can protect their email addresses using Sender Policy Framework (SPF).  Yahoo Groups doesn't use the SPF worldwide standard, they have their own Domain Keys verification system.

Consequently, when a AOL customer is a member of a Yahoo Group, and the email goes out, Yahoo (in their infinite wisdom) will send out the email using the AOL customer's email address... which violates the AOL trademark and AOL's SPF Policy.  Recipients of such messages are instructed by AOL to REJECT such messages that do not originate from an authorized AOL mail server.

To get around this problem, tell the 1USA Webmasters that you are a member of a  Yahoo Group, and an over-ride can be put in place so that you will receive the emails from that Yahoo Group.
