| 1USA gets some Press in the Sunbelt Security Newsletter on 7/8/2010 - Wednesday, July 28, 2010There are lots of companies out there who are experiencing spam coming into their computers. There was a question posed, and the answer provided by BarryZ of 1USA below.
The Quesion:
Concerning the Spam Discussion
Call me late to the party, but I have a question that was not answered when I asked it years ago of my ISP. I know that email addresses can be spoofed, but I do not understand why there are not simple mail rules to catch the most obvious ones. Why would I ever send myself mail? As a test perhaps? I'd be willing to drop that functionality to cut out all the spam that I apparently sent to myself. If a message has my name in the from field, delete it. Why isn't that an option? What about when my name isn't in the To field? How did I get it? Friendly name or not, if either one is wrong, dump it. If the message is from the future by more than a day, delete it. There are many obvious points in the past you should be able to select as well; such as before the internet was invented, before MS Windows, before Y2K, before last year, or before I last checked for mail. I realize that SMTP is broken, that it was never intended for public use, and that it never had safeguards designed into it, but I don't know why the email programs on the user computers are not any more adaptable to these oddities. Outlook? Hello? To be fair, since I moved to my new ISP, I get no spam at all. Nor do I get much from work. It could be that I surf more safely now, and keep my email fairly secure. -- CR The Answer by BarryZ:
Yes It Can Be Done
.. And we've been doing it since 2001. 1USA.Com (national ISP like AOL, MSN) has a way to prevent emails with faked headers. If your email address is feedback@SunbeltSecurityNews.com and someone tried to send you an email using your own email address, there are SPF protocols available as well as server programming. Server programming can be set to either challenge, redirect, deny or drop such emails. For instances where email may have an email address of feedback@hotmail.com, if the email is not received here at 1USA from an authentic Hotmail server, likewise there is a choice to challenge, redirect, deny or drop. In addition, the mail servers at 1USA.Com run FOUR different anti-virus programs, protecting the customers better than any other ISP or any other email service. 1USA.Com hosts email for many domains, and there are additional generic domains available if a new customer doesn't want to use TheirName @ 1USA.Com. In fact, you don't even need to change your current email address in order to get email filtering by 1USA. For more details contact webmaster@1usa.com

| Safety while driving - Monday, June 28, 2010Several things to be aware of this year...as gangs and robbers are now plotting different ways to get a person to "stop" their vehicle. There is a gang initiation reported by the local police department that gangs are placing a car seat by the road...with a fake baby in it... waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the baby...
Note that the location of this car seat will usually be beside a wooded or grassy (field) area ...and the person - woman - will be dragged into the woods- beaten and raped- usually left for dead.
DO NOT STOP. DIAL 9-1-1 AND INFORM THEM..... IF YOU ARE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND EGGS ARE THROWN AT YOUR WINDSHIELD.
DO NOT OPERATE THE WIPER AND SPRAY ANY WATER BECAUSE EGGS MIXED WITH WATER BECOME MILKY AND BLOCK YOUR VISION - SO YOU ARE FORCED TO STOP BESIDE THE ROAD AND BECOME A VICTIM OF ROBBERS. PLEASE INFORM YOUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES

| Are Computers Male or Female? - Friday, June 04, 2010Somebody e-mailed this to me. It seems a Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. House, for instance, is feminine: la casa; pencil, however, is masculine: el lapiz.
A student asked, "What gender is computer?"
Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.
The men's group decided that computer should definitely be of the feminine gender (la computadora), because: - No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
- The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;
- Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and
- As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.
The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine (el computador), because: - In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
- They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
- They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and
- As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.
-- The women won.

| Scams from Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, and AOL still abound. - Thursday, January 28, 2010Scams from Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, and AOL still abound.
So many... that when sending emails TO yahoo, their mail servers are so busy handling the scams that our emails TO legitimate yahoo customers is being delayed. 1USA is set to attempt delivery of outbound emails for up to 8 hours. Sometimes emails to Yahoo recipients is delayed on the first attempt. If you receive no further Delay notices, then the email was delivered to Yahoo on the 2nd or 3rd attempt.
If the 4th attempt fails, then the 1USA mail server will notify you a 2nd time. ONLY if an email fails delivery after 8 attempts do you receive a Failure notice.
Know the difference between a Delayed notice and a Failure notice. There are new scams arriving from Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and AOL (all of the 'free' email services) that pretends to be a female in love with you... and you are to click on a link.
The emails are only 2 or 3 lines long and have a link to an INFECTED WEBSITE. The www address of the infected websites change daily.
If you are inquisitive, your computer will get infected. It's that simple.
Please do not click on links in emails from people you don't know. The common denominator about all of these scams is that they are sent To "undisclosed recipient".
So... please tell your friends who use the 'free' email services... that 1USA will no longer accept emails from the 'free' email services that are sent to "undisclosed recipients'.
If a sender doesn't put your name into the To line when they build an email, it's usually junk that you have seen only 6 times in the past 5 years anyway.
No major loss... but a big step ahead for the safety of your computer. BarryZ

| WARNING: 2010 Census Cautions from the Better Business Bureau - Thursday, January 21, 2010Be Cautious About Giving Info to Census Workers
With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the e country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data.
The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice:
** If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device (GPS....why?), a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home.
** Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census. REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS.
While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION. The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations.. Any one asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau.
AND REMEMBER, THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) ON GATHERING THIS INFORMATION. No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau.
Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census.
Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.

| 1USA Dialer and 1USA Email Setup software has been revised. - Friday, December 11, 2009The 1USA Dialer and 1USA Email Setup software has been revised, specifically for Windows7, however now is a good time to grab a copy, whether you need it or not right now, and put it into the /My Documents / _Downloads folder - and save it for a rainy day. 1USA Dialup Connection installer is here. 1USA Email Account Setup software is here. Both programs are real small.
The 1USA Dialer is better than the Windows Dialer because the 1USA dialer is not hackable like the Windows Dialer is.

| Mass web infections spike to 6 million pages - Thursday, October 29, 2009Being careful which websites you surf, i.e. FaceBook, MySpace, MyLife, etc. no longer applies. "Being Careful" simply is not good enough. Even "clean" websites may display "infected" advertisements.
An estimated 5.8 million pages belonging to 640,000 websites were infected with code designed to launch malware attacks on visitors, according to a report released Tuesday.
The Malware is mostly software that wants you to divulge credit card information or would lead to cleaning out your bank accounts.

The numbers, compiled over the third quarter by security firm Dasient, represent a significant jump in number of legitimate websites that have been compromised. Story here... | Reasons why the sending server needs to match the From-Address - Monday, March 02, 2009 |
| Yahoo Groups - Tuesday, January 20, 2009Domains can protect their email addresses using Sender Policy Framework (SPF). Yahoo Groups doesn't use the SPF worldwide standard, they have their own Domain Keys verification system. Consequently, when a AOL customer is a member of a Yahoo Group, and the email goes out, Yahoo (in their infinite wisdom) will send out the email using the AOL customer's email address... which violates the AOL trademark and AOL's SPF Policy. Recipients of such messages are instructed by AOL to REJECT such messages that do not originate from an authorized AOL mail server. To get around this problem, tell the 1USA Webmasters that you are a member of a Yahoo Group, and an over-ride can be put in place so that you will receive the emails from that Yahoo Group. For more info about SPF, visit http://www.1usa.com/spf.html

No problem.
If you are reading the pages on this website... and you like what you see... but only have a @AOL, @NetZero, @Hotmail (etc.) email address, you can sign up with 1USA and retrieve ALL your emails in one safe place: - You can keep your other less-secure Email Address for any length of time. Our 1USA Mail Servers can 'pull' emails from any other server.
Our 1USA server will 'import' your other emails and run them through our four different anti-virus & anti-malware scanners - where you can be pretty sure that the 'nasties' don't get into your In-Box.
To start, simply Register on this website.
